This explains what personal information Odds & Why collects, why, who receives it, and the choices and rights you have. Odds & Why is operated by Sociobot, Inc. (“we”, “us”), which is responsible for your information.
In short
- We ask for one thing about you: your email address, to sign you in.
- We keep your questions so we can run them and score them. They are private unless you share them.
- We don’t sell or share your personal information, and we don’t use it for advertising.
- You can delete a question, or your whole account, yourself at any time.
1. What we collect
| What | Examples | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Identifiers | Your email address; a username, only if you choose to appear on the leaderboard; your IP address | You; your device |
| What you put in | Your questions, their rules and sources, your instincts, and whether you share a question | You |
| Purchases | Your plan or packs, what you paid (by card or Bitcoin), and how many questions you’ve used. Stripe holds your card details; we never see your full card number | You; Stripe; Zaptrain |
| Device and usage | Browser and device type, the IP address and time of each sign-in session, and request and error logs | Your device |
We also store what the AIs write for your questions and how each forecast scored. We don’t collect sensitive personal information such as government IDs, financial account numbers, precise location, health or biometric data, and we ask you not to put any into a question. We don’t build a profile of you or use your information to make decisions with legal or similar effects about you.
2. How we use it
- To sign you in, keep your account secure and send your sign-in codes.
- To run your questions: send them to the AI models and search provider, show the results, check the answer when it’s due, and score each forecast.
- To provide your plan: take payment through Stripe or Zaptrain, count your questions, give back questions that fail on our side, and email you purchase confirmations.
- To show the public leaderboard, as totals only, and your username on it only if you opt in.
- To prevent abuse and fraud, such as the bot check, limits before sign-in, and stopping repeat free accounts, and to fix problems.
- To keep records the law requires, and to enforce our Terms.
- To send you service messages. We send marketing email only if you ask for it, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
We don’t use your questions to train AI models, and we don’t sell them.
3. Who receives it
We share personal information only with service providers that process it for us, under contracts that limit what they can do with it, and where the law requires it:
- AI model providers (currently models hosted by Ollama) receive the question, its rule and source, and the AIs’ earlier answers, to write each answer. They don’t receive your email address.
- A web search provider (currently Serper) receives search terms drawn from your question when the AIs look things up or the answer is checked.
- Stripe processes card payments and receives your email address and payment details.
- Zaptrain processes Bitcoin Lightning payments and receives your email address and the payment request. We keep the amount in sats, the dollar price and the exchange rate used; we don’t see your wallet’s details.
- Cloudflare delivers and protects the site, runs the “are you a person” check, and gives us visit counts without cookies.
- Our email provider (Resend) sends sign-in codes and purchase confirmations.
- Our hosting and error-monitoring providers store the service’s data and help us find faults.
- Authorities or others, if the law requires it, to protect people’s safety or rights, or to enforce our Terms.
- A buyer or successor, if Odds & Why is sold or merged, under this policy.
What’s public: the leaderboard shows totals for each AI and, if you opt in, your username and your totals, never your email or your questions. A question you share can be opened by anyone with its link, until you stop sharing it.
4. No selling, no sharing, no ads
We do not sell personal information, and we do not “share” it for cross-context behavioural advertising, as those terms are used in California law. We haven’t done so in the past 12 months. We don’t run ads or advertising trackers. We honour Global Privacy Control signals, though there is nothing to opt out of. Our site doesn’t respond to “Do Not Track” signals differently, because we don’t track you across other sites.
5. Cookies and similar storage
We use only what’s needed for the site to work: a secure cookie that keeps you signed in, storage in your browser for preferences such as light or dark theme, and the cookies Cloudflare needs for the bot check. We don’t use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
6. How long we keep it
- Your account and questions: until you delete them. When you delete a question, its text is removed and only its scores are kept, as numbers with no question text, so the leaderboard stays accurate.
- When you delete your account: we remove your email, questions and instincts and end any monthly plan, except what we must keep.
- Payment records: as long as tax and accounting law requires, usually up to 7 years.
- Sign-in sessions, logs and security data: only as long as needed for security, fraud prevention and fixing problems, then deleted.
- Backups: deleted data can remain in backups for a limited time until they are overwritten.
7. Your choices and rights
Whoever you are, you can:
- see your questions and plan any time under Your predictions, Plans and Account;
- delete any question, or your whole account, from the app;
- choose whether to appear on the leaderboard, and stop sharing a question at any time;
- ask us at [email protected] for a copy of your information, or to correct or delete it.
California residents have the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose; to get a copy of it; to correct it; to delete it; to opt out of its sale or sharing (we don’t sell or share); to limit the use of sensitive personal information (we don’t collect it); and not to be treated differently for using these rights.
Residents of other US states with privacy laws have similar rights, and may appeal if we decline a request by replying to our decision.
In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, you also have the right to object to or restrict how we use your information and to complain to your data protection authority. We use your information to perform our contract with you (running your account, questions and plan), for our legitimate interests (security, preventing abuse, improving the service), and to meet legal obligations. Your information is processed in the United States; where required, we rely on standard contractual clauses for the transfer.
How to make a request: email [email protected] from your account email. We confirm it’s you by that email address, and respond within 45 days, or tell you if we need longer, up to 90 days in all. You may use an authorised agent, who must show us your signed permission; we may still ask you to confirm the request. We won’t charge you or treat you differently for making a request.
8. California “Shine the Light”
We don’t share personal information with third parties for their own direct marketing.
9. Adults only
Odds & Why is for people aged 18 and over. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us information, email [email protected] and we will delete it.
10. Security
We protect your information with encryption in transit, access controls and monitoring. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your information, we will tell you as the law requires.
11. Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we’ll tell you by email or in the app before it applies. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
